Why Sleep Changes After 60

Sleep patterns naturally change as we age. Older adults often fall asleep earlier, wake more easily, and may sleep less deeply. However, the need for sleep does not decrease — adults over 60 still need 7–8 hours of quality sleep.

😴 How Much Sleep Do You Need?

The National Sleep Foundation recommends 7–8 hours per night for adults over 65. Less than 6 hours or more than 9 hours are both associated with poorer health outcomes.

✅ Tips for Better Sleep

  • Consistent sleep schedule — Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, including weekends
  • Create a sleep-friendly environment — Cool, dark, and quiet room
  • Limit screen time before bed — Blue light suppresses melatonin; avoid screens 1 hour before sleep
  • Limit caffeine after noon — Caffeine has a half-life of 5–6 hours
  • Avoid alcohol near bedtime — Alcohol disrupts sleep quality
  • Exercise regularly — But not within 2–3 hours of bedtime
  • Relaxing bedtime routine — Reading, gentle stretching, or warm bath
  • Manage stress — Journaling or meditation before bed can help

⚠️ When to See a Doctor

If you regularly have trouble falling or staying asleep, snore loudly, or feel excessively tired during the day despite adequate sleep time, consult your healthcare provider. Conditions like sleep apnea are common and very treatable.

Sleep & Energy Connection

Poor sleep leads to fatigue, impaired concentration, weakened immune function, and increased risk of chronic disease. Quality sleep is the single most important factor in your daily energy levels.
